Bradycardia is defined as a very low heart rate caused by some kind of illness or malfunction of the heart's electrical rhythm. The average resting heart rate for an adult is about 60-70 beats per minute.
Usually a low resting heart rate is not a problem if it is caused by a very strong, efficient, and healthy heart where it can do the necessary work with fewer beats. But if it is caused by a malfunction of the heart's electrical system then poor circulation is the result which can result in unconsciousness, respiratory arrest, and cardiac arrest.
Bradycardia is usually treated with medication and/or a pace maker.
